JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON
A 14-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 1589,
for 1801, with later conversion from flint by another, well rebrowned octagonal to sixteen-sided to round 33 1/2in. barrel, turned girdle, white metal bead fore-sight, moulded nipple-boss with vented platinum plug and single gold band, trophy engraved top-tang with rope-twist engraved border to leading edge, border engraved lock retaining pan cut-out and signed 'JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON', the top of lock with inlet supporting piece alongside the standing breech, small trophy engraved to tail, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist (inlet repair forward of lock), engraved iron furniture (traces of finish), twin barrel cross-keys with white metal oval escutcheons and competent replacement ramrod
Provenance: This shotgun is interesting as Neal & Back's publication 'The Mantons: Gunmakers' lists this number 1589 as a double barrelled 16-bore caplock bearing the crest of the Daykns family of Derbyshire. The authors speculate however that the gun mentioned in the book could be spurious as certain features do not follow the working practises of Joseph Manton. It is therefore reasonable to assume that this is the true gun number 1589
