JAMES PURDEY, LONDON
A CASED 16-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 2348,
for 1832, with browned laminated 29in. barrels, the top-rib signed 'J. PURDEY No. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON' (lightly refreshed), bead fore-sight, shell engraving and platinum line and vented plugs to breech, fully scroll and border engraved top-tang inhabited by the mask of a dog, borderline and scroll engraved colour hardened locks (possibly colour refreshed), figured walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron furniture and ebony ramrod, in a period mahogany guncase lined and compartmented in green baize for gun number 1674, retaining a flask and cleaning rod, parchment original trade label inside lid
Provenance: According to Patrick Unsworth's publication 'The Early Purdeys', this shotgun was sold to retailer J. Baker on an unspecified date during 1832. It is interesting in that the barrels bear a 'J.P.' maker's mark, but the breech-blocks are marked between the hooks 'T.E' for Thomas Evans.
