Grandson to Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet, twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, former Home Secretary, one of the founders of the modern Conservative party and the father of British policing, having founded the Metropolitan police during his time as Home Secretary.
Colonel Hon. Sir Sidney Cornwallis Peel, 1st and last Bt. was born on 3 June 1870. He was the son of Arthur Wellesley Peel, 1st Viscount Peel of Sandy and Adelaide Dugdale. He married Lady Adelaide Margaret Delia Spencer, daughter of Charles Robert Spencer, 6th Earl Spencer and Hon. Margaret Baring, on 9 April 1914. He died on 19 December 1938 at age 68.
Educated at Eton College and New College, Oxford University, he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1898 entitled to practise as a barrister. He fought in the Boer War in 1900 serving with the Oxfordshire Imperial Yeomanry and was awarded the Queen's South Africa medal with three clasps. He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1917, initially as as a Major with B Squadron of the Bedfordshire Yeomanry, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in May 1915, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1917. The Foreign Office took him away from active service to be among its financial crisis advisors in November 1917, as such in 1919 he attended the Peace Conference, scrutinizing the Bulgarian settlement. From 1919 until his death, he was chairman of the Export Credits Guarantee Department Advisory Committee. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Uxbridge between 1918 and 1922. He achieved the rank of Colonel and was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.). In 1929 he was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) and was created 1st Baronet Peel on 14 July 1936
