A CASED .461 (GIBBS) GIBBS-METFORD FARQUHARSON FALLING-BLOCK BACK-POSITION MATCH RIFLE, serial no. 14489,
circa 1890, with 34 3/4in. blued heavy tapering barrel, signed 'METFORD PATENT 1457' and 'GEORGE GIBBS CORN STREET BRISTOL', block fore-sight base, no provision for rear-sight, the action and furniture engraved with fine acanthus scrollwork, the right side with 'FARQUHARSON'S PATENT 578' and mounted with a large thumb-operated safe, the left a beaded oval cartouche engraved 'GEORGE GIBBS BRISTOL', chequered walnut pistolgrip stock with moulded horn grip-cap, vacant oval escutcheon to underside of butt, ribbed horn heel-plate, the actual heel inlet with a mount for a back-position vernier sight, in its maker's darkly stained pine storage case, the interior un-lined and compartmented, parchment Gibbs trade label inside lid and complete with boxed set of sights for the rifle and a spare mainspring, handle of case absent
