A CASED .256 FLANGED (6.5X53mmR ROMANIAN) GIBBS-FARQUHARSON FALLING-BLOCK SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 18577,
made for The Earl of Durham circa 1893, with 26in. unsigned nitro barrel, ramp fore-sight, block mounted rear-sight of four folding leaves with standing 'battue' notch, white metal sight lines and marked for 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards, action number 919, bolted side safety with gold-inlaid 'BOLTED' detail, the action and furniture engraved with fine acanthus scrollwork and on the left a beaded oval cartouche engraved 'GEORGE GIBBS BRISTOL', chequered walnut pistolgrip stock with engraved steel pistolgrip-cap (with trap), an oval escutcheon to underside of butt engraved with an Earl's crown and the initial 'D', sling eyes and a chequered iron heel-plate, in its maker's leather bound storage case marked on the outside of lid 'EARL OF DURHAM', the interior lined and compartmented in red baize, gold tooled black leather Gibbs trade label inside lid (some mothing to lining, one end of case charred externally, handle partially detached)
