A GOOD .577/450 MARTINI-HENRY SERVICE RIFLE MARK I/II MARKED ENFIELD, no visible serial number,
dated 1874, with 32 1/2in. barrel with proof-marks and 'sold out of service' stamp, receiver bridge marked with 'DP' (for Drill Purposes) scored through and with 'MT' (for Morris Tube) stamped alongside, receiver with crown above 'VR / ENFIELD / 1874', lock-viewer's mark and offset 'II' and '2', (indicating an original 2nd Class arm converted from a Mark I rifle to a Mark II rifle), plus Birmingham conversion/inspection marks, further inspection marks over with 'sold out of service' mark, original Mark I chequered butt-plate, butt with arsenal extension (original short-butt Mark I extended to become a long-butt), good, clear Birmingham /I\ WD roundel dated 1878 with 'II' and '2' under, plus 'sold out of service' mark with, on the opposite side, 'DP' scored through and 'MT' stamped in front, complete with both sling-swivels, clearing rod and original (Nepalese-stamped) Martini-Henry sling, all parts, including the clearing rod, appearing to have inspection and/or /I\ WD stamps, service wear knocks to stock but no apparent splits or losses, also comes with a rare original Morris Tube rear leaf sight

Provenance: After conversion from a Mark I to a Mark II rifle, it was down-graded to a Class 2 arm and then used for drill purposes. Subsequently, in the early 1880s, it was then fitted with a Morris Tube (hence the 'DP' stampings being crossed through and the 'MT' stampings added), which reduced the calibre to .297/230 for training purposes, before being sold out of service, at which time the Morris Tube would have been removed
